Today, Tuesday March 11th, a 55-year-old man will appear before the Alicante Provincial Court on charges of setting a mattress in a slum beneath a bridge in Grafitero Kiz plaza on fire.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the incident happened on the morning of May 2nd, 2024, when the defendant used a lighter to start a fire, knowing that people were sleeping there at the time. The fire spread and forced the victims inside the shacks to flee; no personal injuries were reported, but there was material damage.
A significant column of black smoke was produced as firefighters from the Alicante Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue Service (Sepeis) extinguished the fire. A few minutes later, the National Police arrived.
Nine months later, he is being temporarily sentenced to 13 years in jail by the Public Prosecutor for the crime of arson. At 10 a.m., the trial will begin in the Third Section of the Provincial Court of Alicante. The next day of the oral hearing is tomorrow, Wednesday March 12th.
