National Police officers detained a married couple in Alicante for allegedly living with the corpse of a 74-year-old retired national police officer for two months to receive his pension. According to À Punt and police sources, they are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
They are accused of a crime against moral integrity for allegedly concealing the body, as well as property misappropriation for reportedly collecting the person’s pension after the body had died. They are a couple, aged 28 and 33, who live in this man’s home. He allegedly took them in, along with their young boy and a nephew, but they fled the residence before officials arrived.
The deceased’s children had previously reported to officers that their father was not answering phone calls, so they feared something was wrong.
Investigators will try to ascertain the cause of death for this old man, whose body was discovered by officers inside a chamber that appeared to be closed and blocked with a painting to prevent entry.
Preliminary findings indicate that this individual may have been deceased for two months, and the state of the body’s decomposition makes it challenging to determine whether the death was violent. As a result, the appropriate tests will determine the cause of death and whether or not it was natural.
