This incident serves as a testament to the importance of citizen engagement and the effectiveness of the security cameras installed throughout El Campello. The local police have requested a €600 fine for the driver of a van that travelled last week from Alicante to a location near Coveta Fumá, where he shamelessly discarded the rubbish before returning to the city.
The police file was established in response to a neighbourhood complaint, the specifics of which were later validated by security cameras and officers working in coordination with people from the FCC, the company in charge of rubbish collection and street cleaning.
And it was established that the car had travelled from Alicante to El Campello solely for the purpose of collecting construction debris and other belongings… and that it had been seen in the same spot on camera ten days prior.
The statutes impose an initial fine of 300 euros for this type of uncivilised behaviour, which also constitutes an environmental attack. In the event of a repeat offence, the fine might be up to 750 euros. The inspector ultimately fined him 600 euros, pending a study of all records in the region in the coming days to establish whether there were any other spills by the same person or vehicle.
El Campello City Council has declared war on garbage, with the Security, Services, and Maintenance departments under Councillor Rafa Galvañ leading the fight.
Inspectors found up to four more dumps in the same area, and the contents are being carefully examined for clues.
“Enough of this type of behaviour,” stresses Councilman Rafa Galvañ, who declares that the police will issue “relentless” fines. “If education doesn’t work, maybe if we hit their pockets, they’ll think twice before doing it again,” the obviously enraged councilman says. “We’re constantly cleaning up areas, and within a few days they’re once again littered with debris.”
