Several animal rights organisations have announced a series of protests and informational campaigns against bullfighting during the 2025 Bonfires of San Juan celebrations in Alicante. Under the slogan “No tradition is above reason,” the organisations hope to raise public awareness about what they regard as a cruel and outdated practice.
Among the things they push, the organisers emphasise that “bullfighting is not cultural; it is torture for a defenceless, herbivorous animal that does not even kill for food.” It’s a sad and ugly reflection of a portion of society trapped in the 12th century, still profiting from the agony of others.”
Rallies, artistic performances, large-format film screenings, and informational displays with posters are among the planned events. The organising groups state that “you don’t have to be an animal rights activist to join these initiatives; anyone with empathy should speak out against animal abuse.”
Calendar of anti-bullfighting activities in Alicante:
- June 20, 6:00 p.m. – Cube of Truth focused on bullfights, with videos and explanatory posters.
- June 21, 11:00 a.m. – Anti-bullfighting performance organised by AnimaNaturalis.
- June 23, 6:00 p.m. – Peaceful and informative rally in front of the Alicante Bullring.
- June 26, 6:00 PM – Cube of Truth about bullfighting schools in Town Hall Square. Organisers denounce that in these centres, “children learn to enjoy the blood and suffering of an animal.”
- June 28, 6:00 p.m. – Demonstration against bullfighting in Plaza de España .
- June 29, 6:00 p.m. – Final rally for Bloodless Bonfires, also in Plaza de España.
The groups hope for broad citizen participation to demonstrate that “Spain is not a country that, as a whole, enjoys animal suffering and abuse.”
