According to the National Police, a man wanted by Ukrainian authorities for allegedly scamming more than one million euros in that nation was detained in Benidorm (Alicante) after coming to the police station to renew his foreigner’s identification number (NIE).
His arrest occurred at the resort city’s paperwork offices when he was processing his foreigner’s identification card. When his identity was entered into the database, detectives discovered that he was subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Ukrainian authorities in February, and he was arrested.
Between 2023 and 2024, the fugitive allegedly scammed forty people in the Ukrainian province of Lviv by convincing them to participate in a vehicle import business.
According to a statement from the National Police, after fooling everyone, “he kept approximately 1,215,000 US dollars, equivalent to 1,062,000 euros, and fled Ukraine.”
The authorities have taken the detainee, who faces a potential penalty of up to 12 years in jail in Ukraine, before the Central Investigative Court of the National Court, which is in charge of processing his extradition.
