Torrevieja City Council’s Councillor for Gender and LGBTQ+ Policies, Inmaculada Montesinos, and the Director of the UA Torrevieja Headquarters, Jesús Segarra, presented the Pride 2025 festivities on Wednesday morning, June 25th.
The UA Headquarters, the result of a collaboration agreement between Torrevieja City Council and the University of Alicante, is collaborating with Torrevieja Pride 2025 with a talk titled “Between Nits and Merlins: A Journey Through LGBTQ+ Characters on Television,” which will be held at the Torrevieja Casino on July 6th at 8:00 p.m. It will be delivered by Toni Maestre-Brotons, a distinguished lecturer at the University of Alicante.
This intervention provides an overview of the representation of non-normative sexualities in current Spanish-language television series. Its goal is to examine the tropes, trends, most common archetypes, and the identity politics that support them. Merlà (2015-2018), a popular teen series, has received attention for its educational content. We cannot ignore the Javis phenomenon, which has revolutionised television history by elevating LGBT individuals to the forefront of their narratives, from Paquita Salas (2016) to Mariliendre (2025).
Toni Maestre-Brotons is a professor at the University of Alicante and a member of the Institute for Research in Gender Studies (IUIEG) and the Queer Studies Seminar. He teaches current literature and movies. He has studied and written about the representation of masculinity and nonconformist sexualities in literature, film, television, and social media. His work in this field has appeared in publications such as Sexualities, the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, and Fotocinema.
