A 32-year-old man of North African ancestry and Elche resident is battling for his life in the General Hospital after being stabbed at least twice in Elche’s Plaza Primero de Mayo for circumstances that are still being investigated. The incident happened yesterday afternoon, Monday June 30th. Numerous National Police Force and Local Police units were deployed to the location, including a police station that had opened a month before to offer public security. The incident is no more than 200 metres from where it happened. The National Police have since arrested the alleged perpetrator: a 48-year-old Spanish man.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack took place minutes before 6 p.m., when a man approached the victim and attacked him with a knife, apparently without saying anything. The circumstances are unknown, but tensions in the neighbourhood were high in the late afternoon. They allegedly attempted to sever the injured man’s jugular vein and kill him by stabbing him in the neck. He also had at least a second attack on his right leg, which severed a femoral artery.
At the moment, a medically prepared SAMU ambulance was responding to another incident: the death of a 40-year-old man on Esperidion Porta Requesens Street. This individual died hours ago, and his relatives notified the National Police. When they received the report about the knife attack, the SAMU crew was already on the scene, validating the fatality in case it could be certified or brought to court, as it eventually was. The fact that they were less than 200 meters from the stabbing site was critical for the injured person’s treatment.
Doctors successfully stabilised the patient and sent him to Elche General Hospital. As of late Monday afternoon, he was in serious condition in the hospital, waiting for surgery. The two stab wounds he sustained are lethal, and he would have bled to death if medical help had not been so close.
