A youngster was discovered dead after being ‘left’ inside a car in northeast Spain on Tuesday, July 1st,, when temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius.
The boy, thought to be around two years old, was discovered at 3 p.m. inside his father’s car on an industrial estate in Valls, Tarragona (Catalonia).
Emergency services were called in the early afternoon, but they were unable to revive the infant.
Firefighters were the first to arrive at the site and attempted to revive him, with assistance from emergency medical personnel who came shortly after.
The youngster was removed from the car and transferred to an air-conditioned place where his father worked while he and his colleagues waited for aid to arrive.
Everything seems to point to the father’s neglect. The toddler spent the entire morning in a locked car in the sun,’ they said. ‘It was heat stroke. “Even an adult would have died.”
Temperatures in Valls reached 32 degrees Celsius in the shade on Tuesday morning, according to the national meteorological office Aemet.
According to Spanish media reports quoting police sources, the father arrived at work about 9 a.m. and had left the infant in his car seat in the back.
Approximately six hours later, a stunned coworker reportedly raised the alarm after noticing the toddler still inside the vehicle while walking past it on the industrial estate.
Police questioned the father, who has not been identified, at a nearby station. However, it is unclear whether any formal arrests have been made at this time.
Investigators suspect the child died of heat exhaustion and severe dehydration after being left in the car in intense heat.
The family will receive psychological support.
In May, a nearly two-year-old boy died in Linares, in the Andalusian province of Jaen, after being discovered locked inside a car in blazing conditions.
It was then discovered that the youngster had been mistakenly left in the vehicle by his elderly foster father.
A court investigation into the child’s death is still ongoing.
