National Police officers arrested two men, ages 26 and 30, in Gandia on suspicion of robbery with violence and intimidation, as well as attacking two women to steal their handbags, one of whom was injured.
The inquiry began when investigators from the Gandia Police Station’s Local Judicial Police Brigade learnt of two violent robberies that used the same method, with the culprits reportedly fleeing in the same vehicle.
The first instance occurred in mid-May, when a woman walking to work on Paseo de Germanias was approached by a man who aggressively yanked her pocketbook to steal it, knocking her to the ground and injuring her in the process.
According to police, a witness at the scene stopped the crime by scaring the thief, who left in a vehicle waiting a few metres away.
Later, at the beginning of June, another identical incident occurred on Avenida de Valencia in the same town, in the early hours of the morning, using the same tactics.
In this case, the victim was a woman waiting for a cab at the door of a building when she noticed a vehicle with two guys stop in front of her. One of them jumped out and charged directly at the victim, striking her in the neck and attempting to steal her pocketbook before fleeing onboard the vehicle.
A petrol station in the municipality notified the victim minutes later that someone had used her bank card.
After conducting multiple investigations, investigators were able to thoroughly identify the suspects, who were eventually apprehended in the Alicante town of El Verger for alleged robbery with violence and intimidation.
Police records have led the arrested individuals to court.
