A murder, drug shipment, stabbing, burglary, or shooting. The types of crimes in Orihuela vary, but the nationality involved is typically the same.
In recent months, Irish criminals have been involved in several violent acts orchestrated by numerous groups.
Irish criminals have sought refuge on the Orihuela Costa, a multicultural neighbourhood with a significant Irish population.
However, the charms that lure residents and tourists also appeal to criminals, who want to blend in with their fellow citizens and have a strategic base from which to conduct their criminal organisations.
The Kinahan clan, the world’s most dangerous family, which traffics millions of euros in drugs and weaponry and is engaged in hundreds of crimes, has ties to the Costa Blanca, particularly the Vega Baja region, namely Torrevieja and Orihuela.
Although the majority of its members in Spain perform their illegal activities on the Costa del Sol, the province of Alicante has also housed some of its most deadly members.
This is just one of several mafias and gangs that have kept locals up at night recently. These are some of the crimes they have perpetrated in the city by 2025.
Attempted assassination
One of the most recent events linked to the Irish mafia was the June 15th stabbing of Dan McMeekin, a 29-year-old serial offender from Northern Ireland with ties to the local mafia and a lengthy criminal history.
The victim had terrible injuries in La Zenia, one of the province’s most criminally active districts in recent years, but survived.
Dan was associated with groups of criminals who break into homes in Orihuela Costa, particularly in Playa Flamenca. He had also been charged months before with the murder of another Northern Irishman.
The murder of John George, a 37-year-old Northern Irishman, last December, reportedly by a 26-year-old compatriot, landed Orihuela Costa on the front pages of the UK and Ireland newspapers.
The case received widespread attention after the George family’s agonising searagonising search for a missing person was ultimately proventtling scores when the body was discovered in a lemon grove near Rojales in January.

Going back in time, Northern Ireland is once again in the spotlight in Vega Baja’s capital. In January, a The legendary Irish drug lord John Gilligan led the discovery of a “Breaking Bad”-style pink cocaine lab on the Orihuela Costa in January.
During the search, more than 16 kilos of tusi, two and a half kilos of cocaine, 540 litres of chemical precursors, 93.5 kilos of cutting agents for synthetic narcotics, and a 75-litre drum of methylamine were found.
The trail of bloodshed left by these criminals in the city has prompted scores of locals to urge increased security.
These imperfections, however, do not overwhelm the positive coexistence with the Irish population, which includes thousands of inhabitants and tourists, both Northern Irish and Irish.
