Two people, ages 39 and 42, have been arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a food industry salesperson of €30,000 in a highway ambush as he drove from Crevillent to Murcia.
According to the National Police, the victim was travelling with his wife after receiving a €30,000 cash invoice from Crevillent for the sale of an ice cream machine. While driving near Elche, another car struck them in the rear.
The victims pulled over, believing it was a road collision. However, the truck positioned itself directly in front of them to block him from proceeding, and several guys emerged, one of whom appeared to be brandishing a pistol.
They smashed one of the vehicle’s rear windows and threatened the couple, but despite the situation, they acted promptly and departed in their car, detouring to a nearby shopping centre.
Although the attackers attempted to pursue them, they were unable to intercept them and therefore execute the attack, which authorities claimed was carefully planned.
Investigators felt that the attempted heist was not an accident, so they focused their investigation on the individual who paid for the machine, an intermediary acting on behalf of a foreign businessman interested in catering equipment.
The agents were struck by the fact that the meeting location for the payment had been changed multiple times and that the intermediary insisted on the money being transferred in a specific bag he provided.
It was also discovered that the middleman received a phone call at the exact time of the meeting, which might have been used to transmit the victims’ precise position.
A few days later, investigators found the attackers’ car in the village of San Isidro, hidden among reeds and largely stripped. It was a stolen car from Pego that was driving with duplicate license plates.
The inquiry discovered a direct relationship between the intermediary and the perpetrators of the attempted theft. One of the suspects, who was familiar with self-defence skills and had a criminal record, was found and apprehended near his home. Following his appearance in front of the Elche duty court, a search was conducted.
The other suspect, who was found and detained a month later following an intensive investigation centred on him in Orihuela, was hauled before the city’s on-call court, an investigation that is still ongoing.
