This week in Alicante, the Guardia Civil introduced the 168 student guards who will join the province’s numerous units to give duty in the coming months, especially in citizen security responsibilities.
The presentation ceremony was held at the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service facilities and was presided over by Juan Antonio Nieves, the government’s sub-delegate in Alicante, and Colonel José Hernández Mosquera, in command of the Command.
Representatives from the units where they would serve were also present to welcome the 168 trainee officers who had recently arrived from the Guardia Civil’s Academy of Corporals and Guards in Baeza (Jaén) and the Young Guards College in Valdemoro (Madrid).
They have undergone some training over the last few months in preparation for their roles as student guards and future Armed Forces officers.
They are from the 130th class of the Baeza Guard Academy and the 171st class of the “Duque de Ahumada” Young Guards College. They will now spend a year receiving practical training in a real-world setting, obtaining the essential experience to complete their training.
The sub-delegate reminded them that joining the Guardia Civil entails making a commitment to the public, and that they are joining an institution that is widely regarded as one of the most valuable in society. “Being a Guardia Civil entails responding humanely, firmly when required, and always with empathy. It means understanding that the public has placed their trust in you, and that trust must be won every day by professionalism and respect,” Nieves stated.
The colonel welcomed them to the Command and reminded them of the values instilled by the institution’s founder, the Duke of Ahumada, in the Guardia Civil’s manual in 1845 and mirrored in the current Code of Conduct.
They signed the Decalogue one by one in front of the leaders of the Territorial Companies to which they had been assigned for this period, at a solemn ceremony in which they were individually met by both the subdelegate and the colonel.

More guards
Beginning on Tuesday, a total of 2,733 student guards will be assigned to various territory citizen security groups. According to the Benemérita, this statistic indicates a 190-guard increase over the previous year’s recruitment of 2,543.
During the summer, student guards were prioritised in territorial citizen security units based on operational needs. After this period, some Guardia Civil trainees will complete their training in a Guardia Civil speciality.
