The Guardia Civil has detained the son of the well-known 77-year-old Guardamar hotelier who was beaten to death in December 2022 as the alleged perpetrator of the murder, as well as an acquaintance of his, for their claimed roles in the events. The two arrested men were taken before Torrevieja Court of Instruction No. 4 on duty yesterday, Wednesday July 9th, and it was agreed that the son, who is roughly 53 years old and is known in the municipality for his drug issues, would be remanded in detention without bail.
According to reports from the Valencian Community’s Superior Court of Justice (TSJ), the second detainee was given provisional parole with the condition that he appear in court three times each week, have his passport withdrawn, and not leave the country. According to the TSJ, both are still being investigated for homicide in an open case, with no further classification.
Rita Ortiz, the proprietor of the Guardamar Hotel, was found dead in the early hours of December 21st, 2022. Her son, residing with her, reached out to 112 for help, asserting they had experienced a robbery in the house, a claim the Guardia Civil refuted.
The victim’s son was the Guardia Civil’s first suspect in the crime. However, investigators have had to wait for the results of over 100 DNA and fingerprint tests sought by Barcelona’s Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences to strengthen the case against the son for his mother’s horrific death.
Positive results
The evidence took two and a half years to reach the Torrevieja court investigating the case, but it was positive, supporting the findings investigators had used since the beginning of the investigation.
After gathering this evidence, as well as that acquired by specialists from the Alicante Crime Laboratory during their search of the home, the Guardia Civil arrested the deceased hotelier’s son and another man who may have been present at the scene last Monday.
It is unclear whether any of those arrested, based on information acquired by the Guardia Civil, have confirmed their involvement in the events, albeit it appears they have not presented logical explanations and are tentatively blaming one another.
According to sources familiar with the case, Rita’s death may have occurred during an argument with her son, who struggled with drug addiction. During the struggle, evidence shows that the victim fought back, they both slid down a staircase in the house and hit each other in the head.
The woman had a bleeding head wound, and when emergency personnel attended to her son’s call, they could only confirm her death. The son was also treated by emergency personnel for a knock to the head and claimed that supposed robbers attacked him and that when he awoke, he discovered his mother had died.
Bedrooms with locks
The Guardia Civil discovered that the victim’s jewellery had vanished. According to those familiar with the situation, she may not have placed too much trust in her son because his bedroom was locked and he would kick her out when she left the house.
