Repairs of seven padel courts and two frontenis courts at Torrevieja Sports City will be finished between September and October, according to the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, and Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, who visited the facilities. Both have declared this project almost from the start of the last municipal term, with a stronger emphasis beginning in 2022.
They were delayed by the pandemic, followed by the prioritisation of other reconstruction projects, such as the construction of the La Mata Sports Centre, the repair of neighbourhood sports courts, and the restoration of the Sports Palace.
For more than four years, until the opening of the La Siesta padel courts, the municipality with over a hundred thousand residents lacked public facilities for this sport. Several organisations have taken advantage of this opportunity, opening paid padel courts just a few hundred meters from Sports City.
In addition to court restoration, Torrevieja Sports City will build a new access control system, a café, accessibility enhancements, and additional work on other existing facilities. The project will require a total investment of slightly more than one million euros.
MarÃa Fernández, the architect overseeing the project for Pavasal SA, as well as the mayor and sports councillor, paid a visit to the building site on Tuesday. The project began at the start of the year and will be “fully completed and ready to begin operating in September or October, when the Municipal Sports Schools season begins.”
For Dolón, these works achieve the government team’s goal for Torrevieja residents, particularly with the opening of the seven totally renovated paddle tennis courts and the rest of the rehabilitated infrastructure. He added that the town had spent 20 million euros on sports facilities during the past five years.
Padel Courts
The architect stated that the seven panoramic padel courts, which will be converted for the World Padel Tour (WPT), will adhere to the Spanish Padel Federation’s regulations. The courts will be outfitted with fibrillated artificial turf, LED lighting columns, openings on both sides, and anti-injury technology. Furthermore, the centre stands will be outfitted with anchored plastic seats, and they will be restored and painted brick. A ramp is being built to connect the three sites on different elevations, providing a fully accessible approach for all people.
Frontenis
The repairs to the two frontenis courts are almost finished. The current lighting has been replaced with more energy-efficient ones, the perimeter mesh has been replaced, the sports surfaces of the repaired courts have been painted, and the existing access points have been replaced with larger ones that allow machinery to enter for maintenance work.
New access controls
The existing access control on Delfina Viudes Avenue is also being replaced with a larger one. This will reorganise access to the sports stadium, allowing entry control on both sides of the current entrance and the installation of two staff workstations.
Construction is underway for a cafeteria on the esplanade between the gym and paddle tennis courts. The cafeteria will offer an outdoor patio to complement the use of the sporting facilities. This will create a lovely leisure and recreation area for users and their families.
