Guardia Civil officials have arrested a 58-year-old man in connection with the attempted murder of a 29-year-old Irish man, whom he allegedly attacked with a box cutter on the Orihuela Costa (Alicante). The attacker needed emergency surgery at Torrevieja University Hospital. After appearing before Orihuela Court of First Instance Number Three, he was granted provisional release with a restraining order against the victim.
The operation, nicknamed “Combination,” began in the early hours of June 15th, barely hours after the events on a blocked roadway outside a small retail centre in La Zenia, according to a statement from the armed forces.
Following a dispute, the victim was approached from behind while urinating next to an electrical transformer, and the arrested man allegedly used a box cutter to seriously cut his neck.
The investigation was conducted from the start by the Alicante Guardia Civil’s Organic Judicial Police Unit (UOPJ), primarily by the Pilar de la Horadada Judicial Police Team, which was assisted by the Orihuela Costa Local Police, as well as the Guardamar del Segura Judicial Police Team, which performed the technical and visual inspection.
The inquiry centred on a comprehensive analysis of the evidence gathered by police, which allowed them to identify the attack and locate the alleged offender in the region. Officers were able to fully identify the culprit after gathering witnesses, evaluating evidence, and interviewing the victim once she had recovered.
Although the now-arrested man had left his residence days before and his whereabouts were unknown, the revelation of his identity enabled a local police patrol from Orihuela Costa to find him in a local park on June 30th. He was apprehended when the Pilar de la Horadada Judicial Police Team confirmed his identity.
History of Homicides and Drug Trafficking
Because the suspect lacked identity, coordination with Irish officials, who facilitated fingerprint matching, was “critical.”
Furthermore, the Guardia Civil validated the detainee’s criminal record in Ireland for major crimes such as homicide with a firearm and narcotics trafficking.
