The Elche City Council, through the Department of Public Services, has begun to build weather stations at strategic places around the municipality. This network of air quality sensors complements the existing monitoring network and is part of the “Vive Elche” project.
In accordance with previous environmental studies, a total of 12 air quality monitors have been erected in Elche’s urban centre, as well as the districts of Torrellano and El Altet. They have been placed on the following streets: Maestro Melchor Botella, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez with Ruperto Chapi, JoaquÃn MartÃnez Maciá with Rojales, Enrique Pire GarcÃa with Concepción Arenal, Sucre with Av. de Alicante, Corredora with Puente Ortices, Frai Luis de León with Francisco Torregrosa, Magraner with Avet, Plaza de San CrispÃn in Torrellano, Av. Dama de Elche with Av. de Cartagena in El Altet, and Fire Station.
The service will measure environmental and climatic characteristics such as ozone levels, sulphur dioxide, noise, wind direction and speed, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and temperature.
These weather stations, which cost €188,000, will allow the City Council to collect information through the Data Office and monitor air quality and acoustical characteristics in real time.
According to Guilabert, “The project is designed so that in the future, citizens themselves can access this environmental and meteorological data through an app on their mobile phones and, at the same time, make the administration more efficient and effective when making decisions.”
