The Fox Unit of the Alicante Local Police destroyed a total of 2,000 kilos of counterfeit material that had been seized since Easter this week. Officers carried out this operation after opening 408 cases.
The police station contained 720 football kits, 206 wallets and purses, 52 pairs of pants and 48 pairs of trainers, all of which were confiscated.
The Local Police have intensified their efforts to combat illicit street vending in addition to these counterfeit items. The Fox Unit has conducted 120 operations along the city’s coastline and on the San Juan Beach promenade (Niza Avenue) thus far in July.
Unauthorised non-sedentary vending is the focus of police enforcement, which encompasses both non-food products (primarily textiles, including counterfeits and other items such as sarongs and shawls) and food products (drinks, fruit, and vegetables for sale on the beach).
Strengthening Surveillance to Combat Illegal Sales
Four additional officers have been employed by the Department of Security to enhance surveillance and control of illicit drug sales since mid-July. The morning, afternoon, and evening schedules of these officers have been extended until 1:00 a.m., and they are stationed in high-traffic areas including the Explanada de España, Paseo de Gómiz, Postiguet Beach, and the vicinity of the Port of Alicante. San Juan Beach is the focus of the attention of four additional officers.
Julio Calero, the Security Councillor, underscored the necessity of “enforcing the ordinance on public highway occupation and combating this illegal practice of non-sedentary street vending, which is frequently linked to counterfeiting and property crimes.” Calero also observed that the rise in this illicit activity has resulted in an increase in the police force in July.
The City Council is in the process of finalising the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Port Authority. This agreement aims to enhance the coordination between both institutions to implement joint initiatives against illicit vending, particularly in public spaces under the port’s jurisdiction, where this activity is also prevalent.
