Cartagena’s rich heritage and history are on display for thousands of visitors, both during the day and at night. The month of August arrives in the port city, brimming with guided and dramatised tours, as well as evening activities to rediscover some of the Region of Murcia’s most important sites and monuments.
Thus, every Saturday during the summer, starting at 9 p.m., Cartagena residents and visitors will have the opportunity to visit the Roman Theatre and the Molinete Archaeological Park in a unique way, under the stars.
The doors of the Roman Theatre Museum open on Saturdays for a privileged view of the magnificent monument. During “The Theatre Under the Moon,” visitors can take a nighttime tour of the most emblematic project commissioned by Augustus in ancient Carthago Nova. And if you want to travel back in time, Aulaeum, lower the curtain is a dramatised tour led by the great architect Vitruvius, who will reveal the exact measurements and proportions used to ensure perfect acoustics and a beautiful piece of political propaganda.
For its part, “El Molinete under the stars,” according to the City Council, is “a unique experience” that allows you to discover the city’s Roman past on Fridays in July and August. “Experience history where it all began: sheltered by the stars, in the heart of Carthago Nova.”
The Molinete Archaeological Park, the heart of the ancient Roman city of Carthago Nova, opens its doors during special hours to showcase its rich heritage from a new perspective.
Under the light of the stars, the tour uncovers the secrets of ancient Roman baths, religious buildings, roads, and dwellings in an intimate and evocative atmosphere. This activity takes place every Friday from 9:00 p.m.
All reservations and tickets for the various activities can be booked through the website www.puertodeculturas.cartagena.es or by calling 968 50 00 93 or 968 50 48 02.
Morning and Afternoon
Apart from the evening activities, the little ones and the more curious can also participate in morning and afternoon activities. On Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m., the guided tour “From Leonardo to Vitruvius: The Art of Measuring Beauty” is organised.
This activity begins with the panoramic elevator to the Castillo de la Concepción, where participants will discover the golden ratio, the enigmatic mathematical principle, on the floor plan of Santa MarÃa. The tour continues along the façade of the Pascual Riquelme Palace to reach the Roman Theatre itself.
On Wednesdays and Fridays, at 6:00 p.m., there will also be an opportunity to discover the Roman Theater in virtual reality with the guided tour “The Time Machine,” where those interested can immerse themselves in the ancient building through a 3D recreation on tablets. They will be able to visualise what the Roman Theatre looked like in the 1st century, see the pictorial decoration of the virtually reconstructed portico, and many other surprises.
On Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., visitors can take part in the “Citizens of an Empire” activity, a tour that allows visitors to learn about the life of the citizens of the legendary Carthago Nova by visiting the Roman Museum and Theater, the Forum Museum, where the great public buildings such as the baths, temples, and the curia are located, and the Casa della Fortuna, a domus complete with paintings and mosaics.
This way, visitors will delve into the city’s years of splendour, as well as the customs of its inhabitants.
