A 56-year-old woman has been arrested by National Police officers in Elche. Portuguese authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition (EAW) against her for the charges of document forgery and membership in an illicit association.
The documentation services staff at the Elche Police Station informed their colleagues in the Judicial Police Brigade to investigate a woman who had come to the station to renew her documents and was suspected of having a legitimate warrant in Portugal.
At that time, they confirmed that the individual had a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Portuguese authorities since 2015 by consulting the National Police databases. Subsequently, they apprehended her.
Information
The woman who was convicted is expected to serve a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence. In 2006, an investigation was initiated that revealed evidence that the detainee had consistently participated in the fraudulent conversion of third-country driver’s licenses into Portuguese ones, failing to comply with legal requirements and falsifying the document. The charges against her are related to this investigation.
Additionally, it’s alleged that the arrested woman was involved in the irregular acquisition of residence permits in Portugal for individuals who were residing illegally. False declarations and previously forged documents were employed to acquire residence certificates or medical certificates for vehicle drivers issued in Portugal, as well as to falsify visas for extensions of stay or residence permits in Portuguese territory.
In collaboration with other individuals, each of these actions was executed. As per the Portuguese ruling, the number of documents, and consequently the offences, is 122, in addition to the crime of membership in an illicit association.
The Central Investigative Court of the National Court has been tasked with the responsibility of processing the detainee’s extradition, following police investigations.
