Torrevieja Council has announced that the Champions Burger route, “the country’s largest gastronomic festival” in its category (hamburgers), will be joining the city for the first time this year. The festival will come to the city after spending a significant portion of the summer in Benidorm.
According to the event’s promotional announcement, this event is “continuing to break records and anticipates visiting over 50 cities this year as a result of the success it is experiencing from the public this summer.”
Torrevieja will be “filled with the aroma of embers” from August 20th to September 7th as nearly 20 food vehicles arrive to compete for the title of “Best Burger in Spain.”
Antonio Soria Park
In a forthcoming edition, Antonio Soria Park will serve as the rendezvous for “gourmet burger enthusiasts.” The neon-lit portico, which is “inspired by legendary American highways,” is one of these new features. It will be illuminated on the day of the grand opening to create a space where “food and good atmosphere merge.”
The significance of this new stop was underscored by José Morales, director of The Champions Burger: “We have been touring various regions of the province of Alicante throughout the year, and we were particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing the event to Torrevieja.” It is a town that is characterised by a distinctive tourist ambiance, a unique energy, and a diverse audience. We are confident that we will have an enjoyable experience.
Twenty communities
The level of competition has gradually increased after passing through 20 cities, and Torrevieja is joining at a critical juncture. The organiser asserts that the proposals are distinctive, having been specifically designed for this event, and have increased the quality and expectations of both the chefs and the audience.
The municipal press release states that visitors will have the opportunity to sample burgers that “fuse tradition and innovation,” featuring certified meats, artisan breads, and unexpected combinations. Also, the festival’s creative identity will be reinforced by the addition of more innovative recipes that broaden the selection.
The venue will host a designated area for the restaurants of prominent culinary content creators: Moflete, which is owned by renowned YouTuber Joe Burger, and The Ox, which is owned by influencer Pablo Cabezali. Additionally, the current Spanish and European champion, Gottan Grill, will be in attendance.
Spain’s most exceptional hamburger is determined by the general populace
“The audience is the star,” as the promoters of The Champions Burger indicate. The voting system is straightforward: visitors scan the QR code on the purchase receipt after tasting each burger and evaluate the bread, meat, ingredients, presentation, and originality.
The following are among the participants in this stop: Godeo, Nola Smoke, Rico, El TarantÃn Chiflado, Tokio, Vacarnal, K-chopo, Circo, Jisma, Gula, and Madison.
In order to round out the culinary experience, there will be food carts such as Cheeck’s (fried chicken) and Ybarra (French fries), as well as two sweet options: Ioan (artisanal doughnuts) and Seixis (cheesecakes).
Eduardo Dolón, the Mayor of Torrevieja, emphasised that “events such as this serve to solidify Torrevieja’s reputation as a dynamic, open city with an exceptional leisure and culinary scene.” The attraction of an event of this magnitude is a substantial economic and tourism lift, and it serves as confirmation that our city is capable of hosting major events that generate activity and prestige.
Domingo Paredes, the City Councillor for Heritage and Youth of Torrevieja, underscored that “this event not only establishes us on the national gastronomic map, but also provides our young people and residents with a distinctive experience, featuring innovative, high-quality offerings that blend tradition and innovation.” We are dedicated to engaging in activities that revitalise the city, expand our services, and stimulate the economic and social fabric.
Cities including Córdoba, Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Gijón, Zaragoza, Alicante, and San Sebastián have been visited by the route. The Champions Burger is presently situated in Benidorm and will remain there until August 17th. The festival will extend its run in A Coruña from August 13th to 24th, featuring a new halt that is brimming with flavour and inventive burgers.
This year, the event will surpass the record set in 2024, when it attracted over four million attendees across 18 destinations and over 100 participating burger restaurants, and will be held in over 50 cities.
The national final is scheduled for December
The 35 burger restaurants that have received the most votes throughout the year will compete in the main finale in December, which will conclude the competition. The “Best Burger in Europe” will also be selected, an international competition that showcases new, high-quality entries from various European countries.
The Champions Burger is the nation’s inaugural burger championship, and it has become the country’s largest culinary festival, uniting the industry’s most accomplished professionals in a single location during its eight-edition history. The emergence of new specialised burger restaurants has been facilitated by its expansion, which has elevated the standard for the quality, creativity, and sophistication of this product.
The organisation has also maintained its dedication to environmental preservation. Reusable cups are recycled in designated containers in each city, thereby promoting the responsible use of sustainable materials and the reduction of waste.
The burger champions initiative does not incur any expenses for Torrevieja City Council. Neither do the promoters. The sole expense that the municipality could allocate to the initiative is the transfer of public land rights for the occupation of municipal facilities. Nevertheless, these expenses are reimbursed in exchange for sponsorships, which include advertising from the Torrevieja City Council that is displayed within the venue.
The concert hall, which is typically utilised as a parking lot for the weekly Friday market and has been the site of Brilla Torrevieja, has been selected as the venue. The event does not affect this venue, and it continues to operate on all of its August and September dates. The governing team also anticipates that the initiative, which was suddenly announced in the municipal events program without any prior notice, will increase the number of fairgoers.
The venue offers complimentary admission, and the average cost of a hamburger is at least 12 euros.
This event has not been addressed by the Torrevieja and Region Hospitality Entrepreneurs Association. Next October, the organisation intends to host a gastronomic event, as it receives municipal subsidies to execute an extensive annual calendar of activities.
The city’s hospitality industry, which is disrupted by construction and a lack of parking, could be impacted by the holding of this burger competition at one of the main entrances to the city during the peak season. This is a situation in which over 600 businesses are attempting to “make a killing.”
