The second El Campello International Chess Tournament is scheduled to take place from today August 18th, 19th, and 20th. 80 participants of all ages will compete for the title of first place and a prize of 300 euros in this competition. The Casa de Cultura, situated at Plaza de la Constitución 4, will host the event in the Enric Valour Room. Games will be played twice daily, with the first game commencing at 5:00 pm and the second at 7:00 pm. The El Campello Sports Department collaborates with the Torre de Rejas Chess Club to organise the tournament.
Tournament regulations The Swiss system will be employed to conduct the tournament, which will consist of six rounds and will be eligible for FIDE rapid ratings. The rules stipulate that games will last for 45 minutes, with an additional 10 seconds allotted for each play. The arbiter may pair the player with a provisional draw if a game exceeds the scheduled start time of the next round and takes an excessive amount of time, thereby permitting the remaining participants to play their games. The games of participants who are still in the previous round will be postponed. Once they have completed their game from the previous round, they will be able to participate in the new round. The arbiter’s decisions are considered final.
The opponent present will be awarded the victory after a maximum delay of 30 minutes is allowed in all rounds of each match.
The sole prerequisite for participation in the competition is to be federated, possess a valid licence, and make a financial contribution of 30 euros. Participants who participated in the previous edition or are members of the following local chess clubs: El Campello, Mutxamel, Sant Joan d’Alacant, or Talaia Altea will receive a five-euro discount. Players of all ages are enrolled for the tournament, ranging from Laureano Ruiz, who is seven years old, to Ángel Tristán, who is 94 years old. The majority of the participants are from the Valencian Community, but there are also a few from other Autonomous Communities or countries, such as France or Argentina.
In the event of tournament breaks, each participant is granted two optional byes, with the exception of the final round, for which notice must be provided within one hour of the round being played. Byes may be requested for the initial round until 12:00 p.m. on August 18th.
A trophy will be awarded to participants who reach the podium in recognition of their accomplishment. In addition, the top six competitors will be awarded a cash prize:
- Champion: €300
- Runner-up: €250
- Third place: €200
- Fourth place: €150
- Fifth place: €100
- Sixth place: €50
The El Campello Council advocates for the event as a cultural attraction, asserting that it is “not merely a competition, but an experience that fosters decision-making, enhances concentration, and unites generations.”
