The Official College of Physicians of Alicante (COMA) announced the commencement of an ex officio investigation to “assemble the requisite information to facilitate a comprehensive comprehension” of the incident that resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old surgeon from Alicante. The surgeon is accused of the murder of his nonagenarian father, on whom he allegedly performed a homemade operation to amputate several of his toes due to his circulatory issues and the onset of gangrene.
The professional body made a statement in which it declared that it is “available to the competent authority” to provide its assistance “if required,” always within the scope of its powers and “with the utmost respect for the ongoing investigation process.” It also stated that, “in light of the fact that a criminal case has been initiated,” it would be unable to take disciplinary action until the case is resolved through a final judgement or ruling.
He also emphasised the importance of “preserving the fundamental right to the presumption of innocence” and reaffirmed his “commitment” to society and to “strict compliance with the ethical standards governing the practice of medicine.”
