A 51-year-old man has been arrested by the National Police and the Local Police of Benidorm (Alicante) for drug trafficking. The man was apprehended during a routine police check and was found to be in possession of nearly one kilogramme and a half of cocaine.
According to a joint statement from the National Police and Benidorm City Council, the detention occurred during a patrol conducted by the Citizen Security Brigade, which observed “abnormal” driving while the driver was engaged in a video call.
During an early morning patrol, officers observed a vehicle whose driver was using a mobile phone in video chat mode while operating the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by the National Police patrol, but the driver disregarded the order and continued driving until a Benidorm Local Police patrol intercepted it. The driver was “visibly nervous,” sweating profusely and speaking with a trembling voice after the vehicle had ceased.
Officers conducted a superficial security pat-down and vehicle inspection after identifying the driver. A suspicious substance was discovered within the container. They also conducted a preliminary chemical test, which resulted in a positive result for cocaine, with a total weight of 1,470 grammes.
Subsequently, they requested assistance from an additional patrol of the Benidorm Local Police, which arrived with two specialised drug-detection canines. The operation ruled out the prospect of any additional substances being concealed within the vehicle.
Furthermore, the detainee was issued a fine by local police officers for driving while operating a mobile phone and for not holding a driving licence.
The individual who was apprehended, who resided in Vila Joiosa and had originated from Madrid, has been charged with drug trafficking. He has been transported to the Benidorm Court of First Instance and is currently on assignment.
