Two local police officers saved the life of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who was locked inside a car in full sunshine at a supermarket car park in Cabo de Palos, Cartagena, according to police sources.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the open-air parking lot of a supermarket in the coastal town. A woman left her small son in the vehicle while she went shopping at a local grocery.
The small child was discovered inside the car, with the windows closed and in broad sunshine.
When the police arrived, they broke a car window, retrieved the youngster, and carried him “inside the supermarket to take advantage of the refrigerated environment and stabilise his body temperature while medical personnel arrived.”
An EMU was summoned to the scene, where paramedics treated the boy and transferred him to the Santa LucÃa hospital in Cartagena.
A mother’s oversight
The Guardia Civil, the investigative organisation, has jurisdiction over the subject. Officers obtained a statement from the mother in an attempt to clarify what occurred. It is thought that the woman was distracted and uninformed of the dangers of leaving the child there.
According to municipal officials, Cartagena’s Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, has asked the Local Government Board to recognise the Local Police officers who saved the child’s life.
