According to sources close to the Ministry of Health, preliminary investigations by the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions have concluded that the food poisoning that afflicted 190 people at a hotel in La Manga del Mar Menor last weekend was caused by cross-contamination.
The technicians responsible for sample analysis have seen indications that the outbreak is linked to the cross-contamination of salmonella germs, and they have discovered sufficient proof to suggest initiating a disciplinary action against the hotel.
The Epidemiology, Food Safety, and Zoonosis Service and the Public Health laboratories of the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions are currently investigating this outbreak, which has left 21 people—13 adults and 8 children—in stable condition in hospitals.
Food, raw materials, utensils, and samples collected by food handlers are therefore being analysed. According to the same sources, the hotel’s kitchen has been placed on precautionary suspension.
Twenty of the 23 admitted patients are being treated in the Santa LucÃa Hospital in Cartagena, and one adult patient is being treated at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
