On Friday, September 12th, Maritime Rescue and the Guardia Civil worked together to rescue 17 people who were aboard a boat, about eight kilometres off the coast of Benidorm.
Salvamento Marítimo’s social media posts show that a Guardia Civil patrol boat originally discovered the vessel and guarded it until the arrival of the Salvamar Leo, which was mobilised from the Valencia coordination centre. All occupants were safely taken to the port of Alicante, where they were treated by emergency personnel and the Red Cross.
Another episode from El Campello
This rescue came just hours after an empty boat was discovered stranded on the beach beneath the Pueblo Acantilado Hotel in El Campello.
Neighbours in the vicinity called the police at 7:30 a.m. after they noticed the little boat stuck on land. Initial speculation says that the boat arrived in the early morning and that its occupants fled before the authorities arrived.
In these circumstances, the vessels are normally escorted to the port and held by the appropriate authorities while an inquiry is conducted to ascertain whether their people have reached shore and where they are.
According to local sources, further arrivals may have occurred in communities in the province’s north, although there has been no official confirmation as yet.
