A man and two women, ages 37 and 46, were arrested in Elche, Alicante, for allegedly being part of a network that sold counterfeit gold jewellery through broking companies.
According to the National Police, the individuals arrested were from Eastern European countries and were passing off gold-plated pieces as legitimate nine-carat jewellery.
The inquiry indicated that the organisation had at least five individuals, divided into two autonomous groups with common tasks, who travelled from Benidorm to Elche to carry out the scam.
According to the police, the sum defrauded was reduced to around €4,700 as a result of quick police action, and purchasing and selling establishments were warned to the approach employed to enhance preventative procedures.
Two of those arrested were apprehended in Elche while attempting to sell a gold necklace, while the third suspect in a group of five was later apprehended in the same city. An investigation into the arrests of the remaining members of the organisation is underway.
