The National Police have arrested a 25-year-old male in Orihuela on suspicion of assaulting an 85-year-old woman with the “muzzle grab” technique and immobilising her in order to steal her handbag. The detainee was charged with robbery with assault and intimidation, and the octogenarian woman was admitted to a hospital’s intensive care unit for three days.
The incident occurred recently in Orihuela, when the victim was preparing to enter her home in the morning when she was ambushed from behind by a man who grabbed her by the neck and forced her inside.
According to the victim, the man tried to restrain her by putting his arms around her neck and threatening to kill her.
A neighbour was going down the stairs at the time and heard the screams. When he reached the landing, he began to shout at the attacker, who stopped grabbing the woman and rushed away after aggressively seizing her handbag.
The neighbour chased the intruder, who eventually threw the bag to the ground. The witness collected it and ultimately lost sight of the culprit.
The victim spent three days in the hospital’s intensive care unit and is still receiving treatment for the terrible psychological ramifications of the assault.
The Orihuela Local Police Station’s investigation revealed that the perpetrator planned the robbery by following the victim from a bank ATM where she had recently withdrawn money. During the attack, the perpetrator requested the victim’s card’s PIN.
Finally, after investigators had fully identified the perpetrator, a National Police patrol conducting citizen security operations discovered the suspect on a city street and arrested him for the alleged robbery.
Following a police inquiry, the detainee was taken before the Orihuela duty court.
