A Ukrainian man was arrested by the Guardia Civil in the province of Alicante. Moldovan officials filed an international arrest warrant for him, seeking his capture and extradition. He was accused of running a €125,000 cryptocurrency scam. A search at a lodging business helped lead to his location.
The incident, which was reported by the armed forces in a statement on Monday, occurred on September 20th when the Guardia Civil was notified that an alarm had been triggered at the lodging control of an establishment located in a town in the Alicante region of Marina Alta, following the details of a guest for whom an international search, arrest, and extradition warrant was pending.
The police went to the lodging and found this individual. Once identified, they discovered he was a 38-year-old Ukrainian wanted by Moldovan authorities for alleged cryptocurrency fraud totalling €125,000.
The arrested individual was presented before Denia’s Investigative Court No. 2 (Alicante), which transferred him to the National Court, which must decide whether to extradite him to the country that requested him. According to the same source, he has been discharged under precautionary supervision.
According to a press release from the Guardia Civil, all establishments intended to accommodate people of any kind (hotels, hostels, apartments, inns, campsites, rural tourism, etc.), whether managed by companies or individuals, as well as car rental companies, are currently required to record customers’ personal data and report it to the State Secretariat for Security via an electronic registration system available to users.
