Yesterday, Wednesday September 24th, an 18-year-old male drowned off Alicante’s La Cantera beach, near the Punta Piedra restaurant. The victim had gone swimming with some pals, who had hauled him out of the water. Local police officials and later the SAMU (National Emergency Medical Service) attempted resuscitation manoeuvres, but these were ineffective.
The National Police have assumed charge of conducting investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, which will be determined by an autopsy performed today at the Alicante Institute of Forensic Medicine.
Emergencies
The emergency call to 112 arrived shortly before 3:30 p.m. According to police reports, numerous young individuals went swimming in a rocky region near the Punta Piedra restaurant on the Calle La Cantera . One of the young individuals jumped into the sea to swim, and his friends discovered he was gone. They went looking for him and, when they found him, hauled him out and dialled 112 for assistance, which notified the different emergency agencies.
Officers from the Alicante Local Police’s Immediate Action Motorcyclist Group (GRUMAI) were the first to arrive on the scene. They saw that the young man was not breathing and began CPR as they waited for emergency help.
Later, representatives of the National Police, the Fire Department, and a SAMU unit came, and their medical team took over resuscitation manoeuvres, spending over an hour attempting to save the young man’s life, which was ultimately unsuccessful.
Once the death was confirmed, the National Police alerted the duty court so that the judicial commission could arrive on the site and remove the body.
The young man’s mother sought medical attention and was transported by ambulance after learning of her son’s untimely death.
