The Alicante City Council has begun work to adapt the Local Police Headquarters, located on Avenida Locutor Vicente Hipólito, as agreed with the municipal group Vox, with the signing of the staking out report by the Councillor for Security, Julio Calero, and the managers of the successful bidder, Abala Infraestructuras SL. The building’s commissioning will cost 2,802,424 euros and take eight months to complete, with the goal of having it ready for service in April.
“This important project will allow the new Police Headquarters to be operational before next summer and provide the Local Police with first-class facilities, while also improving coverage of the beaches of San Juan, Albufereta, and Cabo de la Huerta,” points out Julio Calero, the Councillor for Security.
“Furthermore, it will be a very important step in the development of the new master plan for the organisation of the Local Police, which divides the city into three districts, with the police stations of Babel, Zona Norte (Barítono Paco Latorre), and Playa San Juan (Avenida Locutor Vicente Hipólito) to bring the service closer to the neighbourhoods,” according to Calero.
The Department of Citizen Security is executing the new Local Police Organisation Plan, which aims to expand the number of community officers in the three districts where the service is provided: Central, Southwest, and Northeast. It also aims to improve efficiency by establishing four primary divisions within the force: Citizen Security, Community or Neighbourhood Policing, Traffic, Transport and Mobility, and the Administrative and Planning Unit. “The main objective of this master plan is to optimise resources and response times in serving the residents of Alicante, with special emphasis on strengthening neighbourhood assistance through the Neighbourhood Policing.”
$4 million investment in infrastructure
This €2.8 million investment at the Local Police Headquarters is in addition to the Fire Department facilities and the projected investment in the Juan XXIII Local Police Station, bringing the total investment in security infrastructure to nearly €4 million.
The City Council has renovated the Jesús González Soria fire station on Avenida Jaime II for over €400,000 and improved the Ildefonso Prats fire station at Playa de San Juan for more than €160,000.
Furthermore, funding has been acquired for the reconstruction of the Juan XXIII Local Police Station in the Zona Norte neighbourhood, as agreed upon with Vox, with a €450,000 investment. This extensive refurbishment of the structure will provide the police service that the neighbourhood need.
New Leadership
The building being renovated has three floors: ground, first and second. The basement contains changing rooms and restrooms, a simulated shooting range, a gun rack, storage areas, and utility rooms. The external enclosures, as well as several interior barriers and features, are nearly complete. The work will involve refurbishing and completing the areas, as well as the stairwells and vestibules.
The ground floor houses the customer service area, which includes entry control, certification, SAIC, and a café. The brigade rooms and conference room are also housed here. In addition, there is a restroom module for service personnel and two public facilities. The floor plan calls for finishing the remaining interior layout, tiling and finishing each room, and installing carpentry and interior fittings. All of this occurs while the project-specific installations are being completed.
The first level contains the theatre, four multipurpose rooms, the IT department, the telecommunications centre, and the Cecopal (Cecopal Office). This level is expected to finish the flooring of the stairs, restrooms, and rooms, as well as the finishing and cladding of the various rooms, and the installation of interior woodwork and hardware. All of this is happening while the project-specific installations are being completed.
The second level holds the Director General’s office, the Local Police Headquarters, the Security Service Headquarters, the primary superintendents, legal services, and the general staff area. The staircase flooring, restrooms, IT department, and offices will be completed, as well as the interior partitioning of the various areas, cladding, finishes and coverings, and interior carpentry and metalwork installation. All of this is taking place while the project-specific installations are being completed.
