A woman who lives in Torrevieja was scared when an unexpected guest showed up at her house. She saw a strange intruder, a griffon vulture, enter her dining room around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23rd. It looks like the monster fell through the light well and chose to come inside, where it made itself comfortable on the couch.
These animals are between 95 and 110 centimetres long, have wingspans of 230 to 265 centimetres, and weigh between 6 and 9 kilogrammes.
A neighbour called the police, and they quickly sent the Environmental Unit. The city animal collection staff helped get the vulture to the Municipal Animal Shelter, where it stayed the night.
Early on Friday, officials from the Wildlife Recovery Centre of the Department of the Environment in Santa Faz (CRFS-Alicante) brought the animal to their facility to check it out, feed it and let it go when it was ready.
The professionals at the centre have done an initial veterinary check-up to see how well he is eating. After that, more tests will be done to see if it is just tiredness. In that instance, he will be given food and let go.
The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is on the List of Wild Species under Special Protection (LESPRE), which means it is protected. The Torrevieja Natural Chronicles website says during this time of year, they wander around and migrate. Sometimes, especially when they are young or when the weather is bad, as that very windy afternoon, they sit on the ground or on structures.
