Three accidents happened in the first month of operation of the video surveillance cameras that were put up in Calpe to make the area safer and keep an eye on traffic. The cameras have helped solve a hit-and-run crash between a van and a truck, an accident in which a scooter rider was hurt and the individuals involved gave different narratives, and a hit-and-run crash involving three cars.
The City Council put in a network of 16 video surveillance cameras on the five main routes of the city a month ago. The Councillor for Security, Guillermo Sendra, a member of the Socialist Party, is responsible for this initial step in a big strategy to monitor and control traffic. The traffic control centre at the Local Police headquarters gets all the picture information. A skilled officer has been given the job of watching and monitoring the cameras from the offices of the Local Police.
The Citizen Security and Information Technology Department of the City Council plans to continue this procedure by starting a second phase, which will add cameras to other parts of the city. The goal is to make Calpe safer, keep an eye on traffic, and provide tools for managing data that can look at the levels of traffic and pedestrian traffic. The second phase of this project has already been given a budget of €100,000.
