On Wednesday, October 29th, environmental agents from the Junta de Andalucía, the Nerja Local Police, and the Guardia Civil worked together to remove about fifty vehicles, mostly caravans, camper vans, and motorhomes owned by foreigners, from the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs on the border of Malaga and Granada provinces.
The cars were parked in the wrong places on the beaches of Las Alberquillas, Molino de Papel, Río de la Miel, and Cala del Pino. After the vehicles were removed from the camp, Nerja town hall’s operations staff cleaned up the area.
In January, the same places were used for the last operation of this kind. It led to the arrest of two people after 100 motorhomes and more than 30 tents were taken down from the same region.
There was also a coordinated effort with the National Police in 2024 to kick campers off of Las Alberquillas beach. In March, the Guardia Civil also took action to remove several motorhomes.
The Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs area is very important for the environment because of the unique shapes of its rocks and the wide range of plants and animals that live there, both on land and in the water.
The Junta de Andalucía keeps an eye on the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs and punishes people who break the rules. They also do various things to help safeguard the species there, which has been protected since 1989.
Camping, fishing without a licence and jet skis
The Junta de Andalucía, with help from other authorities, keeps an eye on illegal parking, camping, fishing (with the help of fisheries inspectors), jet skis (with the help of special services and coordination with the Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit, Seprona), and boats that anchor outside of allowed areas.
Caravans, RVs, camper vans, and people living in abandoned buildings have all harmed the environment and caused difficulties with public order. The regional government says, however, that they are too much for the Junta de Andalucía to handle when it comes to monitoring the environment.
Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza de la Axarquía (GENA-Ecologistas en Acción), an environmental group located in Axarquía, has been speaking out against the growing number of unlawful campers in the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs area for several years now.
