The Torrevieja City Council has put out a bid for the resurfacing and enhancement of pedestrian paths and making them easier to get to in 2025. The city will spend €6,368,670 (including VAT) on this project. Sandra Sánchez, the Councillor for Public Works and Services, said that this investment is part of a series of comparable municipal projects that have been going on for the past few years.
The goal is to rebuild the road surface on 90 roads and avenues in the municipality and make certain areas easier to get to by widening sidewalks and reducing kerbs at junctions. The planned construction will take place in the Acequión neighbourhood and the Mar Azul residential area, along Calle Pedro Lorca (in parts that don’t have these accessibility upgrades), and on Calle Áncora near to Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. The Local Police also suggested that all of the vertical signs be replaced as part of the project.
There are two lots in the deal. Lot 1 will include the southern half of the city centre, specifically the Acequión neighbourhood between Calle Portalicos and Avenida Pinoso. There are more than 40 streets and avenues in this region, which covers 114,856 square metres. The repair will involve grinding the old pavement, compacting the subgrade where needed, putting down a tack coat or primer, resurfacing, and putting up new road signs. All of the infrastructure, like the water supply, sewage system, street lights, phone lines, electricity and gas lines, will be kept. Taking out speed bumps is also part of it.
Sánchez stressed that, in this scenario, the companies that are bidding on this project will be more interested in the improvements they can make than the lower prices they can give.
Mar Azul and Acequion
Along with resurfacing, the Mar Azul Urbanisation will get particular upgrades at certain intersections to make them easier to get to and walk through. All vertical traffic signs that effect these changes will also be replaced. In the Acequión neighbourhood, from Avenida Pinoso to Portalicos between Urbano Arregui and Calle Gregorio Marañón, similar improvements are planned at various intersections with the same goals: to make it easier for people to get around, make certain pedestrian routes better, and replace all vertical traffic signs that affect the improvements mentioned above.
Lot 2
Lot 2 will be in the northern portion of the town centre and will have the same resurfacing work done. Like in Lot 1, the work will involve grinding the old pavement, compacting the roadbed, putting on a tack coat or prime coat, resurfacing, and putting in new road markings. All work will also keep in mind the need to protect the infrastructure for water supply, sanitation, lighting, phone, electricity, and gas. Also, the speed bumps will be taken out.
Calle Pedro Lorca, schools, and Calle Áncora
In this case, work will be done on 108,910 square metres of land, covering more than 50 streets and avenues in the city. The main focus will be on the area around Calle Pedro Lorca, the Acequión and Inmaculada public schools, and Áncora Street, where the public lighting services will also be completely replaced. This last street leads to a residential complex that has its own entrance and exit to Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. For a long time, the people who live there have been asking for public services to be restored.
Six months when they are awarded
The Department of Infrastructure, Works, Services, and Accessibility has also said that the work is expected to take 24 weeks (6 months) to complete when the site handover report is signed.
