Guardia Civil officers have arrested a 37-year-old man in the town of Novelda. He is accused of pretending to be an employee of businesses in the province of Alicante and breaking into changing rooms to steal personal items and bank cards, which he then used to buy ONCE lottery tickets.
On September 29th, three workers at a company in the town of Agost said that their personal things had been stolen while they were working. The Guardia Civil said in a statement that these contained money, papers, and various bank cards that were later used to generate fake charges.
In the weeks that followed, the Guardia Civil in Novelda learnt about other robberies at businesses in different towns that were identical to this one. Because these events kept happening, the Investigation Unit’s operatives started Operation Cortuna.
The Guardia Civil found a suspect who got into the changing rooms by pretending to be an employee of the company or another contractor after looking at all the evidence, talking to victims and witnesses, and looking into financial transactions.

To avoid becoming suspicious, he sometimes wore fluorescent vests or work clothing to do this. Once inside, he is said to have stolen employees’ personal items and used the stolen cards to buy lottery tickets from ONCE, which stands for the Spanish National Organisation of the Blind.
Finally, on October 27th, police found and arrested the person they thought was responsible in Novelda. He is accused of stealing from enterprises in the towns of Novelda, Monforte del Cid, Agost, Castalla, and Monóvar 13 times and committing fraud 11 times. The car he is said to have used to perpetrate the crimes was also taken and given to the court.
The individual who was detained has a history of similar crimes. The duty magistrate in Novelda ordered his parole with the addition of safety measures.
