The Guardia Civil is looking into a 76-year-old man who drove 17 kilometres the wrong way on the AP-7 highway near Torrevieja, which is in the province of Alicante. The motorist, who was from the UK, was pulled over after doing something reckless that put the lives of several other drivers at risk.
The incidents took place on October 18th at around 10:45 p.m. The Management Centre of the highway concessionaire called the Alicante Traffic Operations Centre after seeing a white car going the wrong way on the road to Cartagena, near kilometre marker 754. At the same time, the 112 emergency number got a lot of calls from drivers who were scared of the vehicle’s hazard.
Because of how serious the situation was, multiple patrols from the Torrevieja and Orihuela Traffic Units were quickly sent out to find and stop the car. One of the patrols was able to see it at 11:00 p.m. The driver kept going the wrong way in the left lane, even though there were flashing lights, sirens, and public speech warnings. This forced other cars to swerve to avoid hitting them head-on.
Finally, the automobile departed the highway at exit 737 and was stopped soon after on the CV-912 road, after going the wrong way for a total of 17 km. The man has been recognised and is being looked into for a traffic violation, specifically reckless driving, as set out in Article 380 of the Penal Code.
The Guardia Civil wants drivers to remember how important it is to pay attention while driving and constantly respect traffic signs, especially at the entrances and exits of highways, to avoid accidents that could have catastrophic results.
