The town is still in shock after the death of 22-year-old Martín Pérez Aniorte from Torrevieja. This is not only because of the strange circumstances of the event but the personal circumstances of the death of the man and his family.
The man was recently left without parents. His parents both died of disease in a short amount of time. He had been living with his younger sister at his uncle’s residence since then.
During Holy Week in Torrevieja, the deceased was a bearer for the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of the Fall, just like his father. He was also a great student at the Municipal Football School. He went to the Cuba Public School for his early and primary education. The city government has promised to help the family in every way it can.
A palm tree full of red palm weevils collapsed on the young driver’s car in the middle of the CV-905 highway in Torrevieja, killing him right away. The accident happened around 5:10 p.m. on Friday, November 14th, on this regional route between the Carrefour roundabout and La Hoya, close to the ITV vehicle inspection station. The palm tree was in the row between the four lanes of the road.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón said that he was upset by the disaster and the terrible chain of events that led to it. “That the car just happened to be going by at the exact moment the palm tree broke and fell on the driver’s side…” he stressed.
There have been hundreds of condolences on social media, but there has also been criticism of how the City Council handled the palm trees and how they reacted. Some people were upset that Mayor Eduardo Dolón didn’t mention the tragedy during the Coronation Gala of the Salt Queen on Saturday.
