Since January 2024, over a thousand animals have been taken in by the municipal shelter, with an average of 95 animals receiving care each month.
Alicante City Council intends to grant the contract for the collection, custody, maintenance, observation, treatment, management, and adoption of animals at the municipal shelter to the current managing entity, the Alicante Society for the Protection of Animals and Plants, for a total of €289,187 over a two-year duration. This service provided care for over 400 animals during the first half of this year, averaging 95 animals cared for each month.
Cristina Cutanda, the Councillor for Health and Animal Protection, highlights the significance of this service, which is tasked with “removing abandoned or stray animals from public roads and placing them in suitable enclosures or facilities, with the aim of preventing public and animal health risks and ensuring their care, as well as promoting and managing their adoption.” The service additionally features informative discussions on responsible pet ownership in educational institutions.
Available around the clock, every day of the year
New responsibilities for municipalities have been established by Law 7/2023 of March 28th, concerning the Protection of Animal Rights and Welfare, as well as Law 2/2023 of March 13, from the Valencian Regional Government, which addresses the Protection, Welfare, and Ownership of Companion Animals and other Animal Welfare Measures. These laws mandate the provision of a 24/7 service, available 365 days a year. In this regard, the Alicante City Council is leading the way, having offered this service since 2019.
The municipal shelter has welcomed a total of 1,115 animals from January 2024 to June 2025. During the initial half of 2025, a total of 402 animals were received, comprising 221 dogs, 75 cats, and 126 other species. The average monthly count of animals under its care is 95.
It is noteworthy that since 2015, the city of Alicante has not collected cats unless they are ill, in danger, or located in particularly sensitive areas that may present an issue according to existing regulations. Since 2016, the Alicante City Council has implemented the TNR (trap, neuter, release) method.
