A thirty-five-year-old assistant coach of a women’s youth basketball team in San Vicente del Raspeig has been sentenced to one year in prison for a sexting offence involving two players under the age of sixteen.
According to the ruling issued by the provincial court in Alicante, the coach attempted to persuade the two girls, via WhatsApp and Instagram, to send him photographs of their intimate areas. He did so under the false claim that the images were needed to help his wife overcome a supposed complex about her breasts. The minors did not send any photographs.
Although prosecutors had initially alleged a series of sexual assaults between September 2021 and June 2022 involving thirteen players aged between fourteen and sixteen, the court concluded that no evidence of physical sexual assault had been established. The judgement noted that the coach had hugged and kissed some players in public settings and attempted to arrange one-to-one meetings, but these actions did not meet the legal threshold for criminal sexual assault.
In addition to the prison term, the sentence includes a special ban of five years and six months from any profession or activity that involves contact with minors. The coach will also be subject to five years of supervised release after completing his sentence.
