Yesterday, Thursday November 20th, a yacht caught fire in the port of Cabo Roig on the Orihuela Costa. The ship was in dry dock, more especially in the slipway, for maintenance.
The fire only affected this vessel and didn’t spread to the other ships at the port complex, even though the materials and fuel made things more difficult.
The firefighters got the call at 7:20 a.m. and finished their work at 11:14 a.m. without any injuries, only property damage.
Last June, there was an explosion aboard a charter boat at the same port. The SAMU (Emergency Medical Service) took care of a 35-year-old worker who had significant burns. He was cleaning the boat’s bilge when the explosion happened. It was probably caused by a buildup of gas, which burned his lower body badly.
A medical helicopter took the hurt man, who was awake, to the burn unit at La Fe Hospital in Valencia.
The Guardia Civil looked into what caused the explosion because it was a workplace mishap. The Local Police also responded and got involved almost away. The Provincial Fire Consortium even sent a heavy urban fire engine from the Torrevieja station, but by the time they got there, the fire had already been put out using a fire extinguisher.
The medical crew also helped a 37-year-old with minor burns to the face. He was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Torrevieja.
Municipal sources said that the guy who was hurt and another person who also had minor burns were both customers of the boat rental company in Cabo Roig.
A few days later, another fire broke out in the engine of a recreational boat that was parked at the harbour Internacional harbour, which is near to Acequión beach in Torrevieja. The smoke was so heavy that it could be seen from the whole seashore and the centre of the city.
The fire spread quickly through the recreational boat because of the kind of material utilised to build the hulls of these sailboats. The sailboat was badly damaged along much of its length.
The Marina Internacional crew acted immediately to put out the fire. The fire department of the Provincial Consortium of the Torrevieja park and the Local Police also sent people to help.
