José Francisco Muñoz, the Councillor for Mobility, Economic Management, and Contracting, said at the introduction of the new transport model, which went out to tender on Monday, November 24th, that mobility is an “invisible border that separates opportunities.”
The councillor said that the new model will have unlimited flat prices that “reward loyalty, because the more you use it, the less you pay.” To achieve the same goal, the variations in fares between neighbourhoods and outlying areas will be removed.
There will be a special rate for people under 25, whether they are students or not. In general, the current system will be made easier by going from 20 prices to 7 passes.
Also, there are no transfer costs, and kids up to 7 years old can travel for free. Right now, kids up to 4 years old can travel for free. La Opinión also said that persons with limited mobility can travel for free with their partners.
Muñoz said that the goal is for everyone in the municipality to pay the same price. That’s why costs in outlying areas have been decreased with the single ticket, and with the voucher, the price would be lower.
A new tariff legislation will determine the prices. It is already ready for bidding and will be approved at the municipal plenary session this Thursday or the next one.
List of prices
The single ticket will be good for any of the lines covered by the contract. It will cost €1.50 for trips that start or terminate in the municipality of Murcia. The new zonal fee system of the Region of Murcia (CARM) says that a single ticket would cost €1.90 for trips that start or conclude in the municipalities of Alcantarilla, Beniel, or Santomera.
To encourage people to stop using cash, the price of a single ticket will drop to 1.35 euros if paid for with a bank card or by scanning a QR code. This offer is only available for trips that start or end in the municipality of Murcia.
The pass system is being modified and other sorts of passes are being added. The present tricolour card, which costs one euro to issue, is being used as a model. People who travel within the city of Murcia will only have to pay for the first leg of their trip. Transfers that happen within 60 minutes of the initial validation will be free.
- The general pass is conceived as the current tricolor pass and has no expiration date, and will cost 1.10 euros.
- The student pass lasts between 1 and 4 years, depending on the characteristics of the student’s course, and will cost 0.90 euros.
- The pass for large families, with a maximum duration of two years—or, if earlier, until the expiration date of the large family certificate—is reduced to €0.70. Furthermore, the special large family pass will be free.
- Finally, the social bonus and the bonuses for retirees and pensioners have a maximum duration of two years and will be free , although retirees and pensioners must prove that they receive a monthly income equal to or less than the minimum interprofessional wage established by the state for the purposes of aid and subsidies.
New travel card
The City Council of Murcia wants to make a new citizen card that can be used for a lot of things, like getting on the bus. Like the tricolour pass, there will be several types of cards for different people.
- The general transport card costs 1.10 euros for the first stage of the journey.
- The youth transport card reduces the price to 0.90 euros and the concept of student is modified to include all those aged up to 25 years.
- The large family card also reduces the first stage of the journey to 0.90 euros, and the special large family card includes all trips free.
- The social card and the card for retirees and pensioners also offers all trips free of charge.
- The general monthly pass will cost 35 euros.
- The monthly student pass, which includes university transport and transport to regulated educational centres, will cost 25 euros.
