A 46-year-old man has been arrested in Alicante for allegedly stealing a woman’s handbag with about 6,000 euros in cash in it and losing some of the money while racing away from two police officers.
The National Police Corps said that the events happened in the early hours of November 24th, when the victim was leaving a gaming hall in the city centre and heading to her accommodation. The alleged thief then started talking to her.
He asked her for a smoke at one point, and when she took the tobacco out of her bag, a 50-euro note dropped out. The man took advantage of this and violently stole her luggage a few metres away, hurting her nose in the process. The woman pointed out the direction in which he had run away, and officers were nearby.
The National Police found the man within minutes, and a foot chase followed. “He was losing some of the money and leaving notes along the way,” they said. When they caught him, he had the victim’s purse, phone, wallet, and the rest of the money in his pockets.
The police were able to get back more than 5,800 euros, and the man was sent to the city’s duty court.
