The Guardia Civil is looking into four people who are suspected of stealing cosmetics and perfumes from businesses in the Alicante town of Calpe five times. As part of this operation, officers have found goods worth about €2,000.
The events took place when agents from the Investigation Area of the Main Station in this town were doing their job on one of the busiest streets, where there are many shops, such as perfume and cosmetics stores.
Guardia Civil officers saw a woman with a big purse signalling to a man who was standing close to a car parked in a loading zone. The Guardia Civil said in a statement that the man then got into the car, which made the cops suspicious.
Because there was a chance that a crime was happening, the agents found out who was in the car: two men and two women, all between the ages of 40 and 50, with a lot of police records for shoplifting.
The authorities found three bags in the car that had high-end brand perfumes, unique brand cosmetics, and a variety of apparel items like gloves, caps, and socks.
Bags changed to turn off the alarm
Two bags that had been changed to turn off store alarm systems were also taken. This is a method known as a Faraday bag. One had a ripped liner, while the other had tape and aluminium foil on it to block electrical fields and keep security gates from finding the products that were supposedly stolen.
The Guardia Civil says that none of the people who were named could establish that the products they took were legally obtained. Further investigations showed that the items had been taken from five stores in Calpe and were worth about 2,000 euros.
The inquiry found that the products were supposedly going to the black market because they were “in high demand and easy to sell,” which would have made the alleged criminals money.
The duty court in the judicial district of Dénia has received the case file. The suspects are free until their summary trial.
The Guardia Civil has said that this is part of the Safe Commerce Plan, which is stepped up on important days to make retail places with a lot of people safer and stop burglaries, shoplifting, and thefts.
