According to sources close to the investigation, the Guardia Civil arrested a man on Wednesday, December 3rd, in connection with a double homicide that horrified the town of Lorca (population 98,300, Region of Murcia) about two months ago. A few km from town, the victims were found with gunshot wounds. One of the dead was found tied up in the boot of a car parked in El Cantal, and the other, named Giuliano Velo, was located in his home in the hamlet of Ramonete.
The only known victim, Giuliano Velo, was said to be a member of the Italian mafia. He was on bail awaiting his trial for allegedly manufacturing speedboats used for drug trafficking. Manuel Maza, his lawyer in that case, said that the body of his 67-year-old client was found a few metres from his home in El Cantal, a rocky and hard-to-reach location in the municipality of Lorca.
The Guardia Civil said that hours later, they located the man’s dead body in the boot of a car in the village of Ramonete, which is a coastal location a few kilometres from Velo’s home. The body reportedly showed evidence of assault.
The discovery of the dead led to a large-scale deployment in the area, which included helicopter support. The inquiry into this double murder has been kept hidden ever since.
Velo was waiting for the end of a legal case against him for making boats that were used to smuggle drugs. He was let go in the summer of 2024, after spending a year in jail before his trial. He had already been found guilty of a crime against public health and drug trafficking in 2011. He was caught with two tonnes of marijuana and condemned to prison, but he fled when he was given his first prison furlough. He stayed on the run until his sentence and the statute of limitations for his escape ran out.
He was being looked into for killing another Italian, Giuseppe Nirta, in the coastal town of Águilas, which is very close to where Nirta’s body was located. But the charges against him were withdrawn. Another investigation that connected him to a double murder in Marbella in 1999, for which he was found not guilty, similarly went nowhere.
