The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition says that a Milka Pop-Up 3D Advent calendar that is being given out in various autonomous communities, including the Valencian Community, has allergens that are not listed in Spanish on the packaging.
A warning for persons who are allergic to or can’t eat certain foods
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has warned people who are allergic or intolerant to milk, soy, hazelnuts, other nuts, egg, wheat, and gluten about an Advent calendar that is being sold in Spain that contains these allergens but does not have the information available in Spanish.
The Milka Pop-Up 3D Advent Calendar is the one that has a miniature, three-dimensional Christmas tree figurine that you may put together. It is sold under the Milka brand, which is owned by Mondelēz International. It is part of batch CWS1252831 and has a best-before date of March 31, 2026. The barcode is 7622202013584.
Distribution throughout a number of communities, such as the Valencian Community
Authorities said that the first distribution of the calendar took occurred in the Basque Country, Galicia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Aragon, and Catalonia. AESAN, however, does not rule out the possibility that redistribution to other areas may have occurred through various business channels.
The Coordinated Rapid Information Exchange System (Sciri) sent the notice to the autonomous communities so that they could find the goods and take the affected batch off the market.
Aesan’s advice for people who are sensitive
Aesan says that those who are allergic or intolerant to any of the ingredients listed and may have the calendar at home should not eat it and should return it to the store where they bought it or use the return channels that are available.
The agency does say, though, that the product is safe for most people who don’t have allergies or intolerances to these allergens. The only problem is that the labelling doesn’t have enough information in Spanish, which is important for the safety of people who are sensitive to these allergens.
What the company did and how big the problem was
Mondelēz International said in a statement that the problem is only with the Spanish labelling and that the product’s ingredients and allergen list are the same as those of other products of the brand that are sold in Spain.
To help consumers remember what they need to know, the company has released the full list of allergens and ingredients for the Milka Pop-Up 3D calendar in Spanish. This is to stop sensitive people from having bad reactions.
Mondelēz has made it clear that this labelling problem only affects batch CWS1252831. It has not affected any of the other Advent calendars, Milka products, or anything in the Mondelēz Spain catalogue.
Reading labels and making sure food is safe
Health officials want people with food allergies and intolerances to remember that they need to read labels carefully. This is especially true for Christmas candies like Advent calendars, chocolates, or mixed chocolates, which often have milk, nuts, gluten-containing cereals, or traces of other allergens.
It is also stressed that it is crucial to buy these items from trustworthy sources and maintain the original packaging, as this gives each customer the information they need to decide if the item is safe for them.
