The Council of Ministers have voted to permanently get rid of tolls on the AP-7 ring road segment that goes through Alicante. This means that this road will always be free. The decision comes after a trial period of toll-free access that the Ministry of Transport put in place in recent months to see how it affected traffic in the city and on long-distance roads.
The Ministry of Transport says that lowering the tolls will help ease traffic on the A-70, Alicante’s first ring road. During peak hours, the A-70 had a lot of traffic, which made it hard to get to the city, especially at the northern and southern gates. The Directorate General of Highways will now include the toll-free segment in its network.
The announcement has been welcomed by the Alicante City Council. Mayor Luis Barcala said that getting rid of the toll was a long-standing request from the city to make traffic flow better and make it easier for heavy cargo vehicles and long-distance travellers to get through the metropolitan region.
The government’s decision also comes at the same time as other projects that the Ministry and the council are working on together, like the Torrellano Bypass, the rail connection with Miguel Hernández Airport, the Mediterranean Corridor’s connection with the Port, and the work that is planned in the Central Park area and the railway yard near Casa Mediterráneo.
