The Vega Baja region saw a Christmas Day rainstorm like it hadn’t seen in years. The holiday started with cold weather all over the area, with temperatures barely reaching ten degrees Celsius. It rained from dawn until well into the morning, with the most rain falling along the southern coast, especially in Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa, and Torrevieja. Inland and in the northern section of the Bajo Segura, there were smaller amounts of rain.
But public data from AVEMET, Proyecto Mastral, and Meteorihuela weather stations show that it has rained in all 27 municipalities of the region.

Above average
The year is concluding with its wettest month, which is strange for this semi-arid country. Many places, notably along the southern coast, have seen more than 350 litres of rain per square metre this year. This year’s total rainfall is far more than the normal of 280 litres per square metre.
How hot it is
The statistics aren’t balanced, and rainfall in the middle of the Lower Segura region has stayed average. However, Sierra Escalona and the area around it stand out for their heavy rainfall, which will easily exceed 500 litres per square metre, even though it was mostly from the heavy rains that came with Storm Alice last October.
The Christmas festival on La Zenia beach on the Orihuela Costa, one of the most popular holiday events in the area, was cancelled because of the rain.

Snow
This episode of rain hasn’t reached the higher areas of the Segura basin yet, so the water reserves in the reservoirs haven’t gone up. However, it is expected that it will move inland throughout the day, where it could be recorded as snow in the higher areas of Albacete, Jaén, and Murcia.
Some of these places, like Santiago Pontones in Jaén, where the Segura River starts, or Riopar in Albacete, look very Christmasy right now because of the snow that fell this week. There has also been snow on some of the summits of the Alicante highlands, including Aitana, which is 1,500 metres high.
