The Guardia Civil has taken 112.33 kilogrammes of red prawns from Santa Pola that had been caught, stored and sold illegally. The owner of an illegal warehouse and the person in command of the fishing boat have been reported.
The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) in Elche has charged a 49-year-old Spanish man with several crimes linked to the capture, sale, traceability, labelling, and environmental control of red prawns. The events took place on December 5th, while Guardia Civil officials were checking things out at the Port of Santa Pola.
At one point, in the centre of town, they found two people buying something in a warehouse where the owner had a lot of red prawns that didn’t meet the standards for proper marketing. They then did a thorough inspection of the building and found that the owner was also in charge of a fishing boat.
During the inspection, several boxes of red prawns were found, some fresh and some frozen. This broke the rules in a number of ways: they hadn’t been put up for sale at the fish market, they hadn’t been logged in the ship’s log, they didn’t have labels and they couldn’t be traced, among other things. Also, the warehouse management couldn’t show that they had permission to store this kind of items.
The sanctioning files for these events have been processed and given to the Ministry’s Maritime Fishing Section, the Public Health Area, and the City Council of Santa Pola.
Authorities have checked, seized, and made available a total of 112 kilogrammes of red prawns.
During the Christmas season, the sale of some items goes up a lot, and their prices may go up as well. The Guardia Civil said that people should be careful when they shop and make sure that the labels on products clearly state how to store them and when they should be used by. They also say to shop at regular or trusted stores and be careful of impromptu stalls and those with prices that are too low, as market irregularities can be very bad for your health.
