The Alicante City Council has put into action its special plan for bad weather for individuals who sleep on the streets. The plan took effect from Monday night, January 5th, at 8:00 p.m. until Thursday morning, January 8th, because of rain and low temperatures.
According to city council sources, they will check the weather on Thursday to determine whether to expand the operation.
Begoña León, the Councillor for Social Welfare, said that this move “increases the city council’s ability to house homeless people so that they have a place to sleep and eat during these days when rain and low temperatures are expected in Alicante.”
The Alicante City Council and the Red Cross have an agreement to run this facility. It will add more temporary housing by opening the second gymnasium at the Social Reception and Emergency Centre (CAUS), which will allow fifty more people to stay there each night.
There are 69 permanent spaces at the CAUS on 27 Calle Doctor Jiménez Díaz, plus these new ones. The gym will be open from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. to offer beds with thermal insulation, sleeping bags, and blankets for people to stay in.
Each user will get a set of personal hygiene and grooming items. They will also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The City Council and the Red Cross, on the other hand, will send out their outreach teams to help homeless individuals on the street during certain days. These teams tell people about the opening of the CAUS (Centre for Assistance and Social Services) and help those who want to use it get there.
